Copy Organization
Start a new organization from an existing one — its setup only, or the complete books.
Overview
Copy organization creates a new organization that you own, filled from the one you are in. The organization you copy from is not changed.
Use it to:
- Start new clients from a template. Set up a chart of accounts, tax rates and settings once, then copy the setup for each new client.
- Try things out in a sandbox. Copy a client's full books to test bank rules, imports or year-end journals without touching the real books.
- Move to a new legal entity. When a business restructures, start the new entity with the same accounts, contacts and products.
Only the owner of an organization can copy it. The copy counts toward your organization limit, like creating a new organization.
What gets copied
Choose one of two options.
| Setup only | Full books | |
|---|---|---|
| Chart of accounts, tax rates, cost centers, tags, fiscal years | Yes | Yes |
| Organization settings (currency, fiscal year, address, tax numbers) | Yes | Yes |
| Bank accounts | Yes, without transactions (balance starts at zero) | Yes, with transactions and reconciliations |
| Warehouses, document templates, folders, pipelines, saved reports | Yes | Yes |
| Contacts, products, price lists, bills of materials, bank rules, projects | Optional (on by default); stock on hand starts at zero | Yes |
| Journals, invoices, bills, quotes, credit and debit notes, orders | No | Yes |
| Payments, bank transactions, inventory movements, fixed assets, loans, budgets | No | Yes |
| Documents and attachments (including the files) | No | Yes |
| Document numbering | Starts again at 1 | Continues where the original left off |
| Period locks | — | Kept; the owner can unlock them in the copy |
Items in the original's Trash are copied to the copy's Trash, so records that refer to them stay intact.
What is never copied
- People and access: members, invitations, roles, teams and approval workflows. You are the only member of the copy; invite others from Settings → Members.
- Connections and credentials: Shopify, WooCommerce and Stripe connections, API keys, MCP access, email (SMTP) settings, webhooks and backup destinations.
- History: the audit log, notifications, email logs and import history.
- Payroll, scheduled reports and scheduled payments.
The copy will not contact your customers
In the copy, recurring invoices are paused (auto-send off) and payment reminders are turned off. Invoice payment links are not copied. The copy also gets its own bank-notification email address. Turn automation back on in the copy only when you mean to.
How to copy
- Open the organization you want to copy.
- Go to Settings → General and scroll to Copy organization.
- Click Copy…, enter a name and slug for the new organization, and choose Setup only or Full books.
- Click Copy organization. Keep the window open while it runs; large organizations can take a minute.
- When it finishes, click Switch to the copy to open it, or Stay here.
If any stored files could not be copied, Anchor tells you how many. Those documents are listed in the copy but cannot be opened; upload them again if you need them.
Limits
- One copy of an organization can run at a time.
- You can start up to 3 copies per hour.
- If the copy fails (for example because the slug is already taken), no organization is created. Fix the problem and try again.
